Statement Living Room

Spice it up!

Imagine this: You enter your living room, the most used space in your house, the place where you unwind, entertain, laugh and lounge and all you see are four bare walls, two sofas upholstered in beige, a glass coffee table and maybe a lamp. There’s no indication that this really is your ‘living’ room.

One could say that nothing’s wrong with this, it’s functional And it serves its purpose. But it definitely wouldn’t harm if we added aesthetics to this functionality, bringing in warmth and life to the space. I understand that not everyone has the time, so let’s see what we can do with as little hassle as possible, and with a budget that will not strain your pocket.

Let’s dress it up, personalise it and make it truly yours!

Let’s begin with the two sofas! Bring in some cushions in vibrant colours and patterns. Throw in a bright chenille throw on one sofa, which could also be used to keep you warm on those chilly nights.

Reupholster the single-seater sofas in a nice patterned fabric to add some interest to the room that otherwise screamed BORING!

The coffee table has a very important role to play in your living room, so why not give that some attention! Metal and glass are known as ‘cold materials’, bringing a colder feeling to the room. So to cosy up the room you can do the following.

  1. Let’s get a wooden base and place the existing glass on top of it. (Wood is a ‘live’ element – it adds character to the space).
  2. Place a few coffee table books from your travels, to browse through them from time to time, some artefacts you would have collected from your travels, some fragrant candles that will add some character to the space and make it truly yours.

Roll out a textured rug or a kilim around the area to make it cozy, making it a place you would want to sit on for hours with friends and family sipping on some red wine or coffee. Bring in end tables and place a table lamps with wooden base on it. Keep the curios that you’ve collected over the years out for display. You finally found the right place for them! Dig out the treasures that have been lying unnoticed and give them the spotlight they deserve.

Lighting

Your living room must have the right combination of ambient (general) and decorative lighting to accentuate the overall look and feel of the space. If changing the ambient lighting seems like a mammoth task, you can bring about a dramatic change just by adding a few decorative lights like table lamps, floor lamps, or pendant lights. Try and use lamps with colour temperatures around 2700K to create a more cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

Wall art

Now let’s draw our attention to the walls – this could be the focal point of the living room, you could consider investing in some nice wall art, you definitely won’t regret it! Also In this digital age, we are constantly taking pictures of ourselves, our friends, and our family, but they end up forgotten on the ‘photos’ app on our phones. Bring them out, print them in 8”x10”, frame them and hang them up on your wall in clusters. You will be able to relive your precious moments every time you look at them, always bringing a smile to your face. This is how you personalise your space and call it yours!
